The problem of food waste is relevant for any housewife. A convenient modern appliance will allow you to get rid of the need to collect and dispose of waste generated during cooking. This is a sink shredder that is increasingly found in modern kitchens.
We will tell you why you need it and how the device that grinds the waste from the sink before it is sent to the sewer works. The article we presented describes in detail the popular varieties, their design differences and principles of action. Tips on the selection and operation of units are given.
What is a food waste shredder for?
Waste shredder (utilizer, disposer) - a device used for crushing garbage, especially of organic origin. A device weighing 8-12 kg is usually installed under the sink (sink) and connected to the sewer pipe, where well-ground food debris is discharged.
A household waste shredder is a great addition to any modern kitchen. The compact device installed under the sink makes life easier for any housewife
The first device of this type was invented in the USA in 1927. Its inventor, architect John Hammes, received a patent, and 10 years later founded the company InSinkErator, which is now considered one of the most respected companies producing shredders.
Disposers gained popularity among American housewives already in the late 1940s, however, in European countries and in Russia they became widespread much later.
Meanwhile, such systems make life easier for any woman. A compact device that can find a place in almost any kitchen will allow you to abandon the bin that requires regular removal. The recycle bin also contributes to the elimination of unpleasant odors and helps to avoid blockages in the sink and in the sewer.
Kitchen shredders: advantages and disadvantages
Disposers have many positive qualities:
- they help to maintain cleanliness and order in the kitchen, as well as comply with hygiene standards;
- utilizers are easily installed and dismantled;
- the devices are compact in size, they can be installed even in miniature rooms under a sink or sink;
- such devices are practical and environmentally friendly, helping to combat pollution;
- Disposers are extremely easy to use, even children can include them;
- Devices for the manufacture of which stainless steel is used are very durable. The branded guarantee for various models ranges from 1 to 5 years, however, shredders can work up to 20 years or more;
- devices are completely safe (electric ones do not have knives, access to the piercing element of mechanical models is very difficult);
- utilizers practically do not require cleaning or other maintenance. They have a self-cleaning mechanism, and crushing elements do not require sharpening.
Among the minor drawbacks of such devices are the increase in water and electricity consumption (for electric shredders) associated with their work. At the same time, costs will increase slightly: on average, daily water consumption when using heaters increases by only 3-6 liters, and electricity by 100 watts.

The cons of grinders for sinks also include the high cost of such products (an average of about 300 USD).
Popular varieties of household shredders
The specialized market has dozens of different models of grinders that are used both for domestic and industrial purposes. Two main groups of similar devices can be distinguished.
Mechanical (hydraulic) devices
This type of device is put into operation under the influence of a current stream of water. Grinding is carried out using a system of sharpened knives that work efficiently, silently and safely, since sharp objects are far from the drain of the sink.
Manufacturers offer several types of utilizers. The mechanical device is simple and reliable, but can only work with strong water pressure
Such a device copes well with sinewy and fibrous waste, but it can even stop from a small solid object, such as a cherry stone. Another drawback of such designs is the increased requirements for water pressure. With insufficient pressure and a weak stream, the mechanical meter will not function.
Two types of electrical appliances
The functioning of devices of this type is carried out using an electric motor, which requires their connection to a source of electricity.
Unlike mechanical models, the operation of electric dispensers is carried out using an electric motor, so they require a power source
All models of this type can be divided into two categories:
- Continuous feed choppers. This option allows you to gradually add to the system all appeared cleaning and garbage. In order to bring the device into operation, you must first turn on the mechanism, and then send waste to it. A pneumatic button connected to a pneumatic hose is usually used to start.
- Batch Loading Utilizers. In this case, the waste is stored in the grinder in the sink, more precisely - in a special storage compartment. To fill the tank, the mechanism is activated by means of a button or by turning the neck cap, which is inserted into the sink drain.
The first variant of the disposer is considered more convenient and hygienic, since product residues stored in the tank can cause an unpleasant odor. At the same time, a batch shredder of various food waste for a sink consumes less water and electricity.

The principle of the grinder
The mechanism of action of the electric utilizer is quite simple. The unit is a small tank equipped with a built-in electric motor. A special compartment is provided inside the tank, where the incoming waste is shredded.
At the top of the device is a metal disk, which, depending on the design solution, can rotate at a speed of 1500-3000 rpm.
The main active parts of the device, including the tank, disk, graters, electric motor, are clearly visible on a schematic illustration of the internal structure of the electric dispenser
The durable element is equipped with special devices - freely rotating cams designed for the initial crushing of solid waste. Some modern models have a special advanced function - a reverse system of crushing cams. They are able to circle alternately in different directions, which provides an even more efficient grinding of food debris.
Under the influence of centrifugal force caused by the rotation of the disk, the waste is thrown to the walls of the compartment, where there are self-sharpening graters that grind large enough pieces into small crumble.
Ultimately, the garbage is processed to particles no larger than 3-4 millimeters in size, which are easily washed off by water into the sewer. Food waste processed by the disposer does not clog the sewer systems, but, on the contrary, cleans the pipes.
Important model selection options
When deciding on the purchase of a useful kitchen device, you should pay attention to the following characteristics of the model:
Dimensions, shape. The chopper parameters are important for its installation in a specific place in the kitchen. In some cases, the shape of the model may also have some effect.
When choosing a model, you should pay attention to its dimensions: it must correspond to the compartment where it is planned to be placed, as well as the dimensions of the sink and drain
Power. The indicator is important for electric disposers, since it depends on it what types of garbage the recycler will process, as well as its speed. It is important to remember that particularly powerful shredders (from 1300 W) consume a large amount of electricity. For a family of 4 people, it is enough that the device has a power of 550-1200 watts.
Rotational speed. This characteristic is important for electric grinders, in which it is incorporated in the design. In mechanical models, the rotation speed depends solely on the pressure of the water.
Chamber volume for crushing waste. The size of the capacity is largely determined by the needs of a particular family. For two people, a small tank is suitable, while a large family needs larger options.
When buying a large tank, it is important to ensure that it fits under the sink. It is also important to consider that too small chambers are difficult to cope with a large amount of waste, which can cause them to clog.
Using stainless steel. Parts made of this durable and reliable material are not subject to corrosion.
Thanks to the steel elements, the devices can function in difficult conditions. The best option is a model made exclusively from stainless steel, which, however, affects the cost
To reduce costs, some manufacturers use this material to finish the interior or parts of the disposer. When choosing such a model, it is important to ensure that elements made of other materials are coated with an anti-corrosion coating.
It would be nice if the model has such features as:
- system of automatic protection against overloads, power surges, ingress of foreign objects;
- the ability to reverse disk rotation;
- the presence of several speeds for setting various operating modes;
- reinforcement in the oil shale, which guarantees reliable operation with no leaks;
- the ability to connect to the filter;
- the availability of spare parts (some manufacturers add them to the kit) and the availability of service centers where they can make repairs.
Although these factors usually affect the cost of the product, they can significantly improve the quality of work.
Possible additional features
Many manufacturers equip their products with a number of additional features. Among the most common include:
Silver guard– a protective system that prevents accidental ingress of spoons, forks and other metal objects, which helps to extend the life of the disposer.
Bio shield - technology that prevents the development of microorganisms, and also suppresses possible unpleasant odors.
Torque master - laser balancing of the moving elements of the electric dispenser mechanism. The system allows you to increase the speed and smoothness of the ride, which improves sound insulation during operation of the device and reduces its vibration.
Master mounting system - the thoughtful design of the device, thanks to which even a novice master can install or dismantle the chopper.
The dispenser package may also include a variety of nozzles that are used to process various types of household waste
A number of models of modern waste heaters also include additional pushing machines that facilitate operation and improve work efficiency.
Chopper Connection Instructions
Installing a disposer does not require specific knowledge or a special level of skill: this is within the power of almost everyone. Sinks of old models can cause some difficulty, because the utilizers are designed for modern sinks with European drainage with a diameter of 89-90 mm.
In this case, use models with special nozzles or carefully expand the size of the drain hole.
Before starting the installation, preliminary work should be carried out.
Preliminary Step: Dimension Check
Before installing the utilizer, it is necessary to check the parameters of the equipment being mounted, since the disposer must fit freely into the intended space.
It is advisable to check the following parameters:
- height and width of the installed device;
- distance from the bottom of the sink to the center line of the outlet;
- the distance from the center of the outlet to the end of the pipe;
- distance from the center line of the device to the center line of the connection of the device.
To organize the discharge and prevent the accumulation of water in the working chamber of the utilizer, it is also necessary to monitor the level of the drain pipe extending from the outlet. It should decline towards the wall.
We provide power for the device
When using electric waste heaters, it is important to route the electrical wiring under the kitchen sink, creating an isolated current supply system. You can do this yourself, but it is better to invite professional electricians.
To connect an electric grinder, it is important to conduct wiring and install an outlet with grounding, which must have reliable protection against moisture
It is important that the switch is located under the sink in a convenient location within reach. In this case, the parameters of the mains must correspond to the power of the chopper.
Installation of an electric disposer is a fairly simple process, accessible even to a novice master. Just follow the detailed step-by-step instructions exactly.
Installation of an electric meter
Having finished with the preliminary stage, you can do the installation of the device directly, this process includes a number of standard stages:

Unscrew the bolts connecting the two parts of the neck of the device (lock and sleeve). Putting a seal on the sleeve, immerse it in the drain hole on top of the sink, put a ring-shaped seal, a lock and a metal spring ring on the bottom of the sleeve
Before installing the pneumatic switch in the countertop, we drill a hole whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the device casing. We put it in the hole, fix it under the countertop with a nut. Connect the hose from the switch to the fitting located at the bottom of the chopper
The chopper block is connected to the lock located under the sink. The top three grooves on the case are inserted into the sleeve and rotated clockwise. Then tighten the bolts on the coupling with a hex wrench
To connect a drain pipe that discharges ground food waste and water into the sewer, we install an angle fitting to which we connect a corrugated PVC pipe. We connect it to the outlet into the sewer
Stage 1: Assembly and installation of a mouth in a drain opening
Stage 2: Installing a pneumatic switch in the countertop
Step 3: Connect the chopper unit to the neck
Stage 4: Installing the adapter for connecting the drain pipe
Procedure:
- In the countertop or in the sink, you need to make a hole for the pneumatic button, which should be treated with silicone. Then measure the distance and cut the air hose to the desired length.
- Next, you need to turn off the water supply and dismantle the water seal, as well as disconnect the vertical and horizontal pipes (the latter may require cleaning).
- Then carefully remove the sink outlet and disassemble the upper part of the chopper, separating the upper block of the dispenser and disassemble it. After cleaning the sink drain, put the rubber gasket on the flange and tighten it in place, ensuring a tight fit.
- To mount the upper part of the installation, put a rubber gasket and a lock ring on the flange. After that, put on it a fixing ring with bolts, as well as a snap ring (it should lock in place).
- Tighten the bolts so that the lock evenly and snugly fits the sink. Connect it to the reservoir of the disposer, fixing the connection well. Connect the nozzle to the waste shredder.
- Connect the water trap first to the disposer, and then to the sewer drain. For connection, a smooth-walled siphon must be used. Bottle and corrugated do not have sufficient rigidity, and are prone to blockages, especially in the "knee" zone.
- Install a switch-button in the drilled hole of the sink or countertop.
- Connect the air hose to the nose of the air switch.
If a sink with overflow is mounted in the kitchen sink, its connection is somewhat different from the standard sequence of actions. The connection guide is detailed in our recommended article.
Last but not least, water supply needs to be restored.
Upon completion of installation, you need to turn on water and electricity, and then make a trial run of the grinder for food waste
If the device works, the installation is completed successfully, then the chopper can be used for housekeeping.
Operation of a sink chopper
Using an electric continuous load recovery device is even easier than installing it. To do this, just open the tap with cold water and turn on the device in the network.
Food waste is sent to the drain, to which the disposer is connected. From there they fall into the tank, where the product is crushed.
All garbage and waste should be sent directly to the drain, and then turn on the button for 1-3 minutes. A working device emits a characteristic sound that changes when crushing is completed.
Then you can turn off the device, but leave the water turned on for another 10-30 seconds to remove crushed waste. Only then close the tap.
Disposer Care Tips
In order for the device to serve for a long time and successfully, you must follow the rules of use.
The device processes almost all product residues, namely:
- fruits and vegetables of all kinds;
- eggshell;
- peels from watermelons and melons;
- pasta, bakery products, cereals;
- fruit seeds, nutshell;
- small bones (fish, chicken, even meat);
- pasta, cereals of all kinds, leftover bread;
- fruit seeds and nutshells;
- small bones (fish, chicken, meat);
- cigarette butts;
- paper towels, napkins.
Being careful, you can use some models of disposers to grind such waste as:
- raw veins and meat trimmings;
- scales and fins from large fish species;
- a large number of husks from seeds.
The following types of waste must not be in contact with the device:
- The peel of a banana, ears of corn, onion husks, dill stalks. Due to the fibrous structure of these products, they are not grinded in the grinder, but envelop crushing tools, making their work difficult.
- Hot fat or vegetable oil. Combining with the remaining fragmented waste, it can form a conglomerate, which contributes to the formation of blockages in sewer pipes.
- Hair, plastic bags, threads (including tea bags). Such waste tends to wrap around engine parts, creating overload that can cause serious damage.
- Large meat bones, when they fall, the mechanism is disabled using the locking system, after which the foreign object should be removed using a special device.
- Broken ceramic and glassware, metal and other solid objects. If they get into the utilizer, in some cases you have to dismantle the device in order to get a foreign object.
Please note that individual models can handle other sets of waste. So, some particularly powerful InSinkErator choppers can even crush hard lamb bones.
Care for such household appliances is minimized:
- To eliminate unpleasant odors, you can lower a couple of lemon slices into the waste heat recovery unit and turn it on without water. Upon completion of the work, be sure to turn on the tap to flush the container.
- It is also recommended to periodically lower several ice cubes from the water with the addition of soda into the drain.
- Two to three times a year it is allowed to use a cleanser; In no case should you use drugs to eliminate blockages in pipes or containing abrasive substances.
It is important to note that aggressive chemicals containing acids or alkalis cannot be poured into the sink with the grinder.
